First desktop settings and tweaks

I changed some default Manjaro settings to have a more pleasant experience, a compromise between my old Win 7 and the new Manjaro interface.

  • I don't really like the green theme of Manjaro, and wanted to switch to dark mode. I changed the theme to Brise Sombre, and duplicated its color scheme to modify the default Manjaro green Selection Background Color to a  dark blue #2775c3 . I changed the icon pack to Newaita Dark.
  • I replaced the Start Menu icon by the Windows logo. I selected the Icon Task Manager in the Alternatives (right click on taskbar) and changed some settings in the Application Launcher (Start Menu), also selected the Task Switcher called Thumbnails (Vignettes).
  • I changed the windows decoration from Breeze to Plastik to have the classical Windows minimize, maximize and close icons.
  • I added two widgets to the taskbar: Netspeed Widget to see real time network activity in taskbar, and P-state and CPUFreq Manager to see CPU info and controls (enable Turbo or change max frequency, change power state). I replaced the Show Desktop widget by a fork of it, Win7 Show Desktop.
  • I changed Gwenview settings to have similar Image Preview as in Windows 7, removed the side panel (F4) and changed mouse behavior to zoom, in settings (Ctrl+Maj+,).
  • I removed the touch screen and side screen effects, and reduced virtual desktop to one for now. Also changed mouse behavior to double click to open in Workspace settings.
  • I changed some Desktop Session settings to start a new session on reboot instead of restoring the previous one, and to stop asking for confirmation when I chose to reboot or shutdown.
  • To have better Firefox integration with the dark theme I use, I changed some settings here. Also uninstalled manjaro-browser-settings to remove the bundled settings in Firefox.
  • I disabled the file search service as it was not indexing files properly anyway after trying to fix it (baloo) and the search on SSD is quick enough to let it disabled (actually it wasn't 'working' because it doesn't search in hidden folders). I installed KFind which is much better even if not integrated directly into Dolphin, the file browser interface.
  • Made a custom wallpaper.

I feel more home now.
